Lay Speaker

HELPFUL HINTS FOR FILLING OUT THE 2009 CHARGE CONFERENCE

FLORENCE DISTRICT LAY SPEAKER ANNUAL REPORT:

There are three requirements to be recognized as a Lay Speaker

1.  Recommendation by Local Church

                  2.  Submit complete, accurate, and timely report

                  3.  Update training as required

Part 1: DATA ON THE LAY SPEAKER.

All information in Part 1 must be filled out completely and accurately when submitted to the District Superintendent at the pastor’s consultation.  Only one copy is needed.  It will be reviewed, signed by the District Superintendent and enough copies made in the District Office to prepare for recommendation at Charge Conference.  The names, addresses, and phone numbers of all to be recommended must be listed on the Minutes and the reports placed in alphabetical order to match the four categories below:

Part 2: STATUS OF THE LAY SPEAKER

FIRST TIME:

I am applying to:

BEGIN as a local church lay speaker

This applies to a person who wishes to be recognized as a Local Church Lay speaker (A Local Church Lay Speaker serves as a Lay Speaker at their home church only, after completing the BASIC course).  At Charge Conference, this person either anticipates completing the BASIC course at the next training session, or has recently completed the BASIC course.

Their report must be accurately filled out, signed, and submitted to the pastor in time to be submitted to the District Superintendent at the pastor’s consultation.  Otherwise during the interim between Charge Conferences, the Pastor or Administrative Board may vote to recommend them for the BASIC course only.

NOTE:  This box can be skipped if the person has, pre Charge Conference, already completed the BASIC course and has already taken an ADVANCED course or anticipates taking an ADVANCED course at the next training and is requesting becoming a Certified Lay Speaker.

FIRST TIME:

I am applying to:

BECOME a certified lay speaker

This applies to a person who wishes to become a certified lay speaker (who is allowed and may volunteer to be called on to speak at their home church and at other churches in the District).  At Charge Conference, this person has had the BASIC course and recently completed  an ADVANCED course or anticipates completing an ADVANCED course at the next training date. An Advanced course must be taken every three years.

This person may let the District Director of Lay Speaking Ministries know that they are willing to be available outside of their Local Church.

Their report must be accurately filled out, signed, and submitted to the pastor in time to be submitted to the District Superintendent at the pastor’s consultation.  If they are not recommended at Charge Conference they must wait to be recognized and made available as a Certified Lay Speaker at their church’s next Charge Conference.

RENEWAL:

I am applying for renewal as a:

local church lay speaker

This applies to a person who wishes to remain a local church lay speaker.  They have previously been recommended as a Local Church Lay Speaker.

Their report must be accurately filled out, signed, and submitted to the pastor in time to be submitted to the District Superintendent at the pastor’s consultation.  If they are not recommended at Charge Conference their renewal must wait until their church’s next Charge Conference.

The 2008 Book of Discipline ¶267 states that Local Church Lay Speakers will be required to take a refresher course every three years.  The Florence District Offered the Refresher Class 10/07; 10/08; 3/09.

NOTE:  Anyone who has taken the BASIC and an Advanced course is considered “A Certified Lay Speaker”.  However, they may choose to only serve their local church.  Please advise the District Director of Lay Speaking Ministries of your wishes.

RENEWAL

I am applying for renewal as a:

certified lay speaker

This applies to a person who has been recommended as a certified lay speaker at a previous Charge Conference. At the current Charge Conference, this person has had BASIC, and an ADVANCED COURSE in the past three years.

Their report must be accurately filled out, signed, and submitted to the pastor in time to be submitted to the District Superintendent at the pastor’s consultation.  If they are not recommended at Charge Conference their renewal must wait until their church’s next Charge Conference.

LAYSPEAKERS MUST POST THEIR LAST ADVANCED CLASS WITH MONTH/YEAR.  IF THEY TAKE A CLASS AT WHITE OAK OR AS AN INSTRUCTOR IT MUST BE LISTED THAT WAY.  IF A CLASS IS TAKEN IN ANY OTHER DISTRICT, THE DISTRICT MUST BE POSTED.
